2013 Ford Mondeo gets the 1 Liter Ecoboost turbo petrol engine; Facelifted Fiesta sedan likely to follow suit
In what could be a segment buster of sorts, the Euro spec 2013 Ford Mondeo sedan, which will be unveiled very soon, gets the 1 Liter EcoBoost turbo petrol engine. If you’re wondering what’s so segment busting about this, the tiny 1 Liter, three cylinder EcoBoost engine making it to the Mondeo’s engine bay is perhaps the first time ever that a E-segment car rivaling the likes of the Honda Accord and the Skoda Superb has been powered by a petrol engine this small, and this despite the Mondeo getting bigger than ever before. The EcoBoost turbo petrol engine, though small is a power packed unit.
Turbocharging means that the 3 cylinder, EcoBoost engine produces decent power and torque figures at 120 Bhp and 170 Nm respectively. The engine also has an overboost function which will jack up the torque number to 200 Nm, and this is something that will be extremely useful during overtaking maneuvers when the additional torque will come in quite handy. But it isn’t about the power and torque figures alone that define the 1 Liter, 3 pot EcoBoost engine. In fact, it is the high fuel efficiency and the low carbon emissions that are two major aspects that the small capacity engine scores in.
These reasons have led Ford to deliver the EcoBoost turbo petrol engine to the Euro spec Mondeo’s engine bay, to ostensibly position the EcoBoost equipped variant as an entry level model. The Mondeo will also come with more powerful 1.6 Liter and 2 Liter EcoBoost petrol engines along with 2 Liter TDCI turbo diesel engine. A hybrid version of the car is also on the anvil. The Indian market could get the Mondeo in the coming years. The European version of the Mondeo sedan Ford Fusion in the USA) is expected to make a 2012 Paris Motor Show debut.
The1 Liter EcoBoost turbo petrol engine though will make it to Indian shores by early next year, when it powers the 2013 EcoSport crossover. This very engine could very soon power another Ford car model in India, in the form of the all new Fiesta sedan. The 2013 Fiesta, which is expected to get this engine internationally, along with a facelift later this year, is expected to arrive into India in early 2014. So, the EcoBoost turbo petrol engine will definitely have a bigger role to play in the Indian car market, which is extremely conscious about high fuel efficiency.
