I have been reporting about Mercedes-Benz since the last couple of days now and the influx of news doesn’t seem to die down as of yet. This time, there is news from the hatchback segment, in fact the smallest car on Mercedes’ price list. The Mercedes Benz A-Class prototype has just been spotted. A car that could be coming to India in a few years. Like most premium brands Mercedes-Benz too is looking at the premium hatchback segment. Along with the B-Class, the A-Class could be the car that might be launched to take on the BMW 1-Series.

We saw the concept A-Class at the Geneva motor show earlier in the year. The new A-Class has changed a whole lot from its small, high stance hatchback to a car who’s overall shape resembles more like the Opel Astra. Thus, the new A-Class is wider and longer than the old model. The car gets a sloping roof-line and standard Mercedes door handles. Like most Mercedes-Benz cars these day the grille is wider and more upright. The prototypes featured hear does sport twin-exhaust which could mean that this could be some sporty version. The new A-Class will be based on the new MFA (Mercedes Frontwheel Architecture) platform.

The new Mercedes Benz A-Class will rival the BMW 1-Series but the differentiating factor between both these cars will be the drive train. The baby beemer has a rear-wheel drive setup unlike the A-Class which will have to do with a front-wheel drive setup. However, a three-door version of the A-Class has also been planned with a bigger four-pot, turbocharged engine with 320 bhp on tap. The front-wheel drive architecture would allow Mercedes Benz to price the new car competitively and in India this could well make a difference. Especially with Mercedes-Benz losing out on market share to BMW, folks at Mercedes Benz would be keen to give the Bavarians to give a tough fight.
