Beginning from 2013, the Nissan NV200 MPV will be the new yellow cab of New York, thus replacing the fleet of the ultra recognizable Crown Victorias which have served the city for many years now.

While New Yorkers might find the bread box like NV200 MPV a garish sight compared to the standard fitment that the Crown Vics have come to be of the New York cityscape, 13,000 NV200s over a period of 10 years, are expected slowly merge into the city scape.

The Nissan NV200 has had to contend with rival bids from the Turkish made Karsan V1 and the Ford Transit Connect before emerging victorious to ferry New Yorkers for a full decade beginning from 2013.

In India though, commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland has tied up with Nissan India to produce the NV200 MPV, which will go on sale sometime in 2012, albeit as a people mover competing with the likes of the Toyota Innova, the Tata Sumo Grande and the Mahindra Xylo.

While the New Yorkers will get a 2 liter inline four petrol engine for propulsion, the Indian Nissan NV200 MPV is expected to arrive with a 1.5 Liter, 85 Bhp version of the popular Renault DCi  diesel engine.

Will the use of the Nissan NV200 as a New York taxi dent the prospects of the NV200 MPV in India as the MPV’s image as a upmarket family people mover in India could take a beating? That, only time will tell.
