French car maker Renault has launched the automatic gearbox equipped variants of its sole C-Segment sedan offering in India, the Scala. The Scala Automatic is equipped with a CVT gearbox, which is a first for the Indian C-Segment space. The car comes in two variants RxL and RxZ. While the RxL version of the Scala Automatic is priced at INR 8.99 lakhs, the RxZ version is priced 90,000 rupees higher, at INR 9,89 lakhs. Both prices reflect ex-showroom Delhi figures. The Scala Automatic uses a 1.5 Liter-4 cylinder HR15DE petrol engine good for 99 Bhp-140 Nm.

Notably, Renault India emphasize that the Scala Automatic comes with an ARAI certified fuel economy figure of 17.97 Kmpl, a figure that is even higher than that delivered by the manual gearbox equipped petrol powered Scala. This high fuel economy is said to be the result of the highly optimized X-TRONIC CVT automatic gearbox, one that allows the engine to remain at its optimum operating zone when driven sedately. The Scala is essentially a badge engineered Nissan Sunny sedan and apart from the styling, the car is a Sunny out-and-out.
The Renault Scala shares its engines and transmissions with the Nissan Sunny. However, Nissan India is yet to launch the Sunny with the CVT Automatic gearbox. Now that Renault has launched the automatic variant of the Scala, the Nissan Sunny Automatic should be just around the corner. Given the fact that Nissan cars are positioned below those sold by Renault in India, expect the Nissan Sunny Automatic to be priced lower than the Scala Automatic. The Scala is also available with diesel power. The 1.5 Liter K9K turbo diesel engine, outputting 85 Bhp-200 Nm powers the diesel version of the Scala, a car that is both responsive as well as frugal.
This turbo diesel engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The Scala sedan, like the Sunny, is known for the ample space that it offers to passengers occupying the back seat and for this very reason, is a car that is suited for buyers who like to be chauffeured around town. Heightening the Scala’s appeal for the Chauffeur driven crowd, Renault has endowed the car with rear AC vents. The Renault Scala is built alongside the Nissan Sunny, at Renault-Nissan’s joint manufacturing facility at Oragadam, off Chennai.
