By 2020, the BMW Mini might get station wagon, sedan and van variants!

Here’s a move that has all the potential to make purists cringe. By 2020, the super successful BMW Mini brand that sells in 100 countries across the world, could get three new variants, and these variants are like chalk is to cheese when compared to existing Mini variants. BMW Mini insiders are said to be debating new body styles for the Mini, which include a five door station wagon, a van and notchback sedan variants. Now, while certainly sounds like sacrilege, the new body styles are aimed at making the Mini more acceptable and successful new markets.

While there has been an announcement regarding Mini coming up with new body styles in the past, it is for the first time that news about the possible body styles has emerged. The Mini Stationwagon model is said to be based on the new Mini that will debut in 2014, one that will use BMW’s new front wheel drive architecture. The Mini Van body style variant is said to based on the Mini Countryman platform. Recently, Fiat pulled off a fast one, when the cutesy cute Fiat 500 was joined by a five door hatchback sibling, scheduled to debut at the upcoming 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

The Fiat 500L 5 door Hatchback is based on the Fiat Punto platform and shares very little resemblance with the original Fiat 500 hatchback, disappointing enthusiasts and fans of the iconic Fiat 500 hatchback. Incidentally, Fiat has developed the Fiat 500L to take on the BMW Mini, as the Fiat 500′s small size doesn’t make it a very practical option when compared to the much more roomier Mini. Fiat is also said to be working on a jacked up Crossover version of the Fiat 500, due for a launch in the next few months.
