No 4X4 or automatic variant for the 2012 Mahindra Xylo MPV anytime soon!

The facelifted version of the Mahindra Xylo MPV was launched just hours ago, and our man Melwyn was at the front line to get up and close to the new Xylo along with a few questions we had lined up for the folks at Mahindra. The 4X4 variant of the Mahindra Xylo has been caught doing the testing rounds in the past and when Mahindra did not launch the 4X4 version of the facelifted Xylo today, we were intrigued about the future of this particular variant.

2012 Mahindra Xylo MPV Facelift

When quizzed about the 4X4 variant of the Mahindra Xylo, we were informed that the 4X4 version of the Xylo does indeed exist. However, the 4X4 version of the Xylo will be destined only for the export market. The reasoning given to us was that the Xylo was more of a luxury MPV that mainly sees the rough and tumble of the urban roads and the highways of India. Unlike the Mahindra Scorpio and the Bolero, the Xylo’s user base seldom indulging in using this MPV for off roading.

Therefore, the Xylo 4X4 will not be made available in the Indian market. Another query we put forth was about whether the Xylo would get an automatic garbox variant in the near future. To this, the Mahindra officials replied that no plans currently exist for launching an automatic variant of the Xylo. Mahindra plans to begin exporting the Mahindra Xylo to right hand drive markets very soon and that includes the South African market.

2012 Mahindra Xylo MPV Facelift

A left hand drive variant of the Xylo is also being developed, and over the next few months, Mahindra plans to launch the LHD Xylo in left hand drive export markets. Since its launch in 2009, Mahindra has managed to sell around 90,000 Xylos, making this MPV the second largest selling MPV in India, behind the best selling Toyota Innova.
