Diesel engined Tata Nano by September 2011?
A diesel powered Tata Nano has been on the cards for quite some time now. TimesOfIndia reports that the diesel powered Tata Nano will see a launch by September, 2011. While the report carries news of a 600-700cc diesel engine in the Nano Diesel, our reliable sources have indicated that the Nano Diesel will feature an 800cc twin cylinder Common Rail Diesel engine with a balancer shaft to iron out the vibes.
Equipped with a state-of-the-art CRDI system from Bosch, the turbocharged diesel engine capable of churning out 40-48 Bhp is expected to be designed to last a minimum of 2 Lakh kilometers under real world conditions and deliver a mileage of over 20 KMPL in the city. Of course, since the diesel engine entails higher production costs, the Nano Diesel will cost 10-20% more than the equivalent petrol variants.
What remains to be seen is whether the target segment of the Nano buyers will accept a higher price of the diesel variant, which could easily rival that of the Maruti Alto, especially considering the fact that the Diesel Nano is expected to feature all the upgrades the Nano V2 is expected to receive shortly. This, as most Nano buyers won’t exactly be the folks who traverse large distances to balance out the higher costs of the Diesel variant.
