Teutonic Pocket Rocket: The India bound all muscle Audi A1

German Auto giant Audi has entered the small car segment with its muscular hatchback model, the Audi A1. This is Audi’s smallest car ever which will compete with the best cars of the segment such as The BMW Mini and The Alfa-Romeo MiTo. The rationale behind entering the small segment market is the need of a more fuel efficient and compact car primarily for areas in and around crowded cities. The price of this cool hatchback is expected to be around INR. 18 lakhs for a 1.4 litre model and around INR. 19 lakhs(excluding duties) for a sport level of specification which will come loaded with a sport type suspension setup and larger wheels and tyres.

Audi A1 buyers also get the option of Audi’s S-Tronic 7 speed automatic transmission. Audi will offer quality and technology at a level which hasn’t been seen in the small car segment till date. The A1 will be available in both petrol and diesel versions. The 90 kW 1.4 litre turbocharged fuel stratified injection (TFSI) engine will produce a torque of 200 Nm at 1500 rpm, which can make the A1 reach from 0 to 100 kmph in just 8.9 seconds giving a top speed of 203 kmph. You wouldn’t need to worry about the handling and safety of the A1, for, it is loaded with all the stabilization programmes combined with an electronic limited slip differential.

Keeping in mind the urban auto users, the car is loaded with iPod connectivity, Bluetooth, sports-style multifunction steering wheel, climate control, etc. If it is an Audi, it has to look understated yet elegant. Continuing this design philosophy, the A1 has been given a masculine and sporty yet classy look. The A1 sports a single frame grille following the legendary Audi beard grille. Let us hope that we get to see this hatchback soon on the Indian roads and going by reports by a leading Indian newspaper, the Audi A1 will see an Indian launch sometime in late 2011 or early 2012.

?:-) Pricing matters yaar. I guess these cars will be priced somewhere above 18 – 20 Lakhs. For that huge sack of bucks, most of them will think about, fortuner, santa fe or sedans like accord. What do you say Buddy?
