The Audi Q1 Crossover could see the light of the day; In small, smaller, smallest!

If you think that the Audi Q3 is too large and expensive for you, there’s hope still. Teuton automaker Audi is mulling a baby Q class crossover in the form of the Audi Q1. The Audi Q1 will be based on the A1 platform, and like its name indicates, will be positioned below the Audi Q3 crossover, Audi’s BMW X1 rival. Considering that the Audi Q3 is a more like an Audi A3 on steroids, a smaller crossover like the Q1 could bring Audi dangerously close, if not in price in terms of size, to the likes of the Ford EcoSport Crossover and the Honda Civic Crossover, which is scheduled to debut in late 2012.

However, the Audi Q1, keeping with its brand will be a much more premium offering when compared to the EcoSport, while measuring about the same footprint as the EcoSport. The Mini SUV/Crossover segment is suddenly booming to all new levels with almost all high volume automakers jumping into the fray to announce their plans to make the next mini-SUV or Crossover. We had Ford come up with the EcoSport. Honda joined in with the Civic Crossover. Then, you have Volkswagen talkingĀ  sub-Tiguan andĀ  Peugeot considering a mini crossover based on the 208 hatchback.

Such crossovers are becoming more and more necessary for automakers in the European market, where small hatchbacks and Crossovers are ruling the roost. Coming back to the Audi Q1, while it is being considered, there’s no word on when it will be made, although it appears unlikely that the Q1 will arrive anytime too soon. Time and again, such stories surface, with the automaker talking about considering the option, only to have confirmation of the product being made a few months down the line. So, will the Audi Q1 be more fire than smoke? Stick around to find out!
