Bentley’s new SUV to be first luxury SUV with a 12-pot petrol engine!

Bentley is working on a SUV to join its line-up of luxury saloons and sports coupes. The name of the SUV is not known yet but what we know is that the new SUV will get a 12-cylinder petrol engine. I guess, folks at Bentley are not too concerned about the rising fuel prices or may be, they are more driven by their customers in the Middle East. It will also be the very first luxury SUV to use a 12-cylinder gasoline engine.

One reason for this is that the car will be heavy like most Bentleys and will actually need a humongous engine to power it. Power could well be in the range of 600 bhp. But, what niggles us more is a question that most of you might have on your mind as well. Does the world really need a faster, heavier, bolder, gas-guzzling mammoth? I thought the world was moving towards a more sustainable methods of transportation etc.

I really don’t see the point of this, to be frank. I know there will be a few who could still afford the car. But, I am sure Bentley will throw in a tiny hybrid system and engine start-stop to win over the green party fellows. I feel, car makers should in fact work towards creating a better future. Volkswagen who owns Bentley would argue by pointing out that they also make some of the most efficient cars around. Agreed. But, whatever the reason a 12-pot petrol is just not necessary.

We already have SUVs that are not the most frugal of cars around and now the Germans are determined to add to that yet another one. This they say, will be placed above the current Porsche Cayennes, Range Rovers and Q7s and X5s. I am sure this behemoth won’t be as good as the Cayenne around corners, especially with a big heavy engine upfront. Bentley does plan to introduce a diesel V12 later on.

For this, Bentley is expected to borrow the V12 TDI engine from the Audi Q7. The petrol motor though, could be the next generation W12 that powers the Continental or a new V12 version. Bentley has targeted the year 2015 for the launch of the new SUV. The decision comes as the sales of the other cars in its line-up is expected to slow down over the next couple of years.  All said, please do drop-in your comments below. We would like to know what you think about Bentley’s plans.

Agreed, the 12 cylinder engine is overkill, for people like you and me. But you can’t blame Bentley for tempting the billionaire shiekhs they are targeting.
