BMW India will launch the 1-Series hatchback on the 3rd of September. The car will be the lowest priced BMW in India, and will go head to head with the Mercedes Benz A-Class and B-Class hatchbacks. Throw in CKD assembly at BMW’s Chennai facility and you have the stage set for a cracking price tag. BMW has been showcasing the 1-Series to potential buyers and in the melee, the price of the car seems to have leaked, well before the official launch.
2012 BMW 1 series sports line
Motorbeam is reporting that the the 1-Series’s petrol powered 116i base model will start at ex-showroom prices of Rupees. 21 lakhs while the diesel base version 118d will start from Rupees. 22.9 lakhs. These prices mean that the 1-Series is actually priced lower than the A-Class hatchback. So, the 1-Series could become the lowest priced luxury car in the Indian car market.
The top end 118d Highline diesel variant of the 1-Series is rumored to be priced at Rupees. 29.93 lakhs. The petrol engine on the BMW 1-Series sold in India will be a 1.6 liter unit that is turbo charged. This engine will pump out 136 Bhp and 220 Nm, with an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 16.28 Kmpl. The diesel engine is the 2 liter turbo diesel engine that we see across a range of BMW cars sold in India.
BMW 1 series side profile
This engine on the 1-Series will produce 143 Bhp and 320 Nm. Both engines will drive the rear wheels of the car, through an 8 speed automatic gearbox. A lot is expected from the 1-Series model as BMW has lost it leadership position in India to Audi and Mercedes Benz. So, the company will need a big selling car for it to regain lost ground. Will the 1-Series be that car? The coming months will answer that question. Bookings for this BMW hatchback are already open across India.
