The least priced BMW, and a rear wheel driven one at that, will be launched in India very soon. Why, we might be just a month away from another sporty hatchback in the form of the BMW 1-Series.
The car was spotted testing in India, ahead of its launch. The camouflaging means that the car is definitely on the test mode. There have been rumours in the motoring press that suggests that the 1-Series sold in India will share engines from the X1. This engine sharing means the car will be competitively priced in India. CKD assembly of the car will happen at the BMW India factory in Chennai.
As the car will be assembled in India and will also share engines with the X1, a price close to 20 lakhs is being expected for the 1-Series. Features wise, we think that BMW won’t skimp on equipment on the 1-Series as the car projects the BMW brand, which is known for its high performance and luxury. The BMW 1-Series hatchback’s direct competitor will be the Mercedes Benz A-Class.
BMW India needs to sell more cars if it wants to stay the market leader for 2013. The German car maker, which is the number one luxury car brand globally, has run into rough weather in India. The car maker has now been pushed to third place in India, with Audi and Mercedes Benz taking the 1st and 2nd places for the first 3 months of this year. So, hot selling cars are the need of the day and the 1-Series hatchback might just be the magic pill for BMW.
