BMW 5-Series gets a new set of upgraded engines
2011 BMW 5-Series
BMW has just announced a set of improved engines range across its product portfolio. All BMW cars including the 3-Series, 5-Series, 6-Series, ActiveHybrid 7-Series and the Z4 roadster will get all new upgraded engines with added horsepower, better fuel economy and lower emissions. Before my fellow countrymen get too excited over the fact, let me make it clear that the announcement has come from the BMW global division and that BMW India is yet to formally make an announcement.
Both petrol as well as diesel models of the cars will get new improved engines and could come to India as well as BMW imports its engines into the country. The current range of 5-Series from BMW includes two petrol and three diesel models. The BMW 525d with a straight six cylinder engine now gets 218 bhp which earlier produced 204 bhp. A 520d EfficientDynamics has also been added to the line-up featuring a 184 bhp motor and 380 Nm of torque. Being packed with BMW’s EfficientDynamics the new 520d returns impressive fuel economy figures of 22.2 km/lt.

The range topping diesel variant, the 530d gets 13 more horsepower and now puts out 258 bhp @ 4000 rpm from its inline six-cylinder engine. BMW has also announced all-wheel drive versions of the 5-Series. The Bavarians have thrown in an all-wheel drive system in three petrol and three diesel variants of the car. 528i xDrive, 535i xDrive, 550i xDrive, 525d xDrive, 530d xDrive and 535d xDrive are the models that will be available with four-wheel drive.
We could see the new upgraded engines and the four-wheel drive models coming to India as well. We are happy to report about the new upgraded engines but the same could not be said about the xDrive variants. We think BMWs are more exciting with the normal rear wheel drive setup making them one of the most fun-to-drive cars around. Of course, you would be able to choose between 2Wd variants and 4WD variants. Watch this space for more developments and updates from BMW India on when we could expect the new engines and drivetrains.
