BMW will show the production version of the i8 sportscar at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show. The i8 sportscar will go on sale in countries abroad during 2014 and India might also get this very model later this year. The i8 sportscar is a petrol hybrid model, which means that it combines a petrol engine and an electric motor. The hybrid nature of the i8 sportscar means that it is not only fuel efficient but is also a low emission vehicle. 40 Kmpl is the claimed mileage for the BMW i8, which is a 4 seat sports car.
Since it is a BMW, it has to be a car that is fast and fun to drive. To achieve this, BMW engineers have first given the car a low weight by using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) to keep weight low. The i8 sportscar weighs just 1,490 kilograms, a low weight by hybrid car standards. The low weight, along with powerful turbo petrol and electric motor means that the BMW i8 is a very fast car.
BMW has given the i8 a 1.5 liter turbo petrol engine that pumps out 231 Bhp and 320 Nm. The electric motor, which is powered by lithium ion batteries, produces 131 Bhp and 250 Nm. Together, these two power options give the BMW i8 a power rating of 362 Bhp and a torque rating 570 Nm. The car accelerates from stationary position to 100 Kph in 4.4 seconds and the top speed is 250 Kph.
The petrol engine drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8 through a 6 speed automatic gearbox. The electric motor drives the front wheels of the car. When operating together, the petrol engine and electric motor give the i8 an all wheel drive. The i8 also gets brake energy regeneration that charges the lithium ion battery during braking. The i8 can be driven in many modes.
In pure electric mode, the BMW i8 can travel for 35 kilometers before the lithium ion battery’s charge runs out. In pure electric mode, the i8 can reach a top speed of 120 Kph. When operated on electric power, the car can be driven in Comfort and Eco Pro modes. When operated on electric+petrol power, the car can be driven in Comfort, Eco Pro and Sport modes.
