A while ago, BMW shocked us all by announcing that 2012 is when it will launch a three cylinder turbo diesel engine to reduce costs, emissions and improve fuel economy. Now, BMW has given the world a sneak preview of it’s 3 cylinder, 1,500cc diesel engine. Now, the good thing is the fact that we have no nasty surprises in store.

The engine will be a three pot single turbo common rail diesel engine, which will basically be one half of the six cylinder BMW turbodiesel engines. Like the bigger engine, the smaller engine also will retain a 500cc cubic capacity per cylinder and is expected to be used only on front wheel drive beemers.

So, that effectively means that the 2012 3 Series Sedan probably might not get the 3 cylinder engine and that should relieve plenty of 3 Series enthusiasts who were aghast at rumors circulating about the 2012 3 Series Beemer getting a three pot diesel engine, at least temporarily.

The reason being the fact that mounting the 3 pot turbo diesel engine on the 2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan would be a costing challenge and also the fact that a three pot 3 Series Sedan might not go down well with prospective 3 Series buyers. So, BMW will use the three cylinder engine on the next generation small car that is is developing currently and on certain versions of the Mini.YouTube Preview Image
