Bummer: The Ford EcoSport Crossover might not arrive into India until 2013
Brazil will get the 2012 EcoSport crossover in the next few months. China too is expected to get this SUV by October. India though might have to wait for many more months, perhaps the wait even stretching to 2013 before which the EcoSport could finally roll into the country as Ford’s first compact SUV. This information is courtesy a tweet by AutocarIndia editor Hormazd Sorabjee, who has had this to say about the 2013 EcoSport crossover’s Indian launch, which according to him is not arriving into the country anytime in 2012. So, it might be well be 2013 before which the EcoSport could be launched in India.
The EcoSport Crossover is built on the Ford B-Car platform, the same platform that underpins the likes of the all new Fiesta hatchback and sedan. The EcoSport is a compact crossover that will be available in both front wheel drive and all wheel drive variants. However, it remains to be seen whether Ford India will offer the all wheel drive variant of the model for the Indian car market. The four wheel drive variant is an almost certainty for the Brazilian car market though, where the EcoSport will replace the older variant that has been around for quite some time now.
The jewel in the EcoSport’s engine line up will be the 1 liter, three cylinder turbo petrol engine. This engine, displacing all of 1,000cc will pump out a peak power of 120 Bhp and a peak torque of 170 Nm. Ford has also outfitted a nifty overboost function to this engine that will liberate another additional 30 Nm of torque for high pressure maneuvers like overtaking. The other engine of course is the 1.5 Liter Ti-VCT four cylinder petrol engine that is also present on the all new Fiesta sedan in India. This engine produces 110 Bhp-140 Nm. The standard transmission option is expected to a be a five speed manual gearbox.
A six speed PowerShift dual clutch automatic could also be used on the petrol engines of the EcoSport. Ford has not announced the diesel engine for the EcoSport yet although an option seems extremely likely. Expect the 1.5 Liter TDCI diesel engine good for 90 Bhp-200 Nm to be in the scheme of things when it comes to oil burner power. All said and done, we really hope that Ford brings the EcoSport sooner than 2013 to India even as the Renault Duster will already have had a good opportunity to entrench itself firmly with an launch in the middle of 2012.

All this while I was wondering who of the two (Ford/Renault) would launch their product first. Now we know, Renault would have solo launch this Diwali. Whether it will eat into Ecosport’s market share or will people wait till Ecosport is launched before making a buying decision is to be seen.
