Bummer: Toyota says no to Fortuner Automatic in 2011!

Days ago, we reported about buzz that Toyota might launch an automatic version of it’s ultra popular SUV, the Fortuner. However, Sandeep Singh, the Deputy Managing Director of Toyota has officially cleared the air saying that the Toyota Kirloskar Limited will not be launching an Automatic version of the best selling Fortuner SUV. Here’s what Mr Singh said.

As of now there is no plan (for AT) because Fortuner is doing well.

Furthermore, Mr Singh also reiterated that Toyota had no plans to launch the Foruner Automatic even at the 2012 Auto Expo. That simply means that the Fortuner Automatic might not be launched for the next one or two years at least. That will give Toyota Fortuner rivals a real sigh of relief.

What this also means is that SUV buyers looking for the added convenience of an automatic gearbox will continue to patronize the Chevrolet Captiva, which will see a refresh soon, with some even shifting to the BMW X1. So, we think that Toyota has missed an opportunity here. That however, isn’t too surprising as Toyota really takes a long time to make decisions to launch new models.

Well, the automatic version of the 4×2 variant has been launched. I wonder when the automatic version of the 4×4 variant will be launched. Any information on that?
