New Chevrolet Corvette Car Design May Be Outsourced

Think of the Chevrolet Corvette as how America would be like if it was not a country, but a car. It’s more American than the Mustang could ever be. It’s the car on which songs were written. It’s inseparable from the American psyche quite like Uncle Sam and Middle East interests. So why would GM look for any studio outside the US to redesign this epic American car?

That’s what GM is up to now as the company has discovered that the new generation customers isn’t that excited by the Corvette anymore. The average age of Corvette buyers has risen so much that it’s being driven more by 50 year old daddies than the boy racers. The latter has instead taken up Japanese imports and European sports cars. That isn’t encouraging in any way for GM and if they do not take some steps to bring back the young crowd, the Corvette won’t be in existence to write punch lines, not to mention songs.

GM isn’t planning to make the Corvette look so much European that it won’t remind anyone of a Corvette. The intention is to make it appeal to the buyers who are going for the Beemers and the Mercs. The Corvette has a powerful V8 engine which makes horses gallop with sheer aggression and they are going to retain that spirit.

We did get to see the 50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray concept in autoshows and in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. (Remember the Autobot Sideswipe?) That won’t be an advisable direction to go in terms of styling. It may look convincing as a show car and as a transforming alien robot onscreen. But on the road and as a practical sports car…well…it quite won’t work as expected.
