Chevrolet Cruze Plug-In Hybrid could be in the pipeline!
General Motors might give their best seller, the Chevrolet Cruze Sedan, the plug-in hybrid treatment soon. According to Jim Federico – General Motors’ Chief Engineer for Global Compact, Small, Mini and Electric Vehicles, The Volt will always be a plug-in electric vehicle but a Cruze Plug-in Hybrid wouldn’t make it redundant because it would have a different powertrain. While that could be construed as GM’s plans for the Cruze Plug-In Hybrid, we still need official confirmation on the same to go with Federico’s statement.
Any which ways, considering that the Cruze might indeed get a plug-in hybrid option, the questions of whether it will be petrol powered or diesel powered arise. So, far General Motors’ Volt Plug-In Hybrid car is a petrol hybrid with the electric motor deriving charge from the petrol engine acting as a generator. In case of the Cruze, the electric motor could be used for whist trips whilst the petrol engine might be the primary source of propulsion on the highway. Expect the Cruze Plug-In Hybrid to be targeted mainly at the American market where the demand for frugal fuel sipping cars is rising exponentially.
Coming to the Indian market, while a Cruze Plug-In Hybrid would make a lot of sense as Indians are big buyers of cars delivering high fuel economy, the higher cost associated with a hybrid car means that General Motors India might not really want to bring the Cruze Plug-In Hybrid to India, as the relatively more frugal Cruze Diesel already is a good seller in the Indian D-segment sedan space. Cars like the Toyota Prius Hybrid and the Honda Civic Hybrid have failed to take off in the Indian market, despite being on sale for almost a couple of years now.
