General Motors’ second launch for 2013 in India will be the Enjoy MPV, the rebadged Wuling Hongguang. March 2013 is when this MPV will bow into India, more than a year after it was first showcased at the 2012 Indian Auto Epxo. The Hongguang MPV is developed by Wuling, a Chinese car brand owned by SAIC, which also happens to be General Motors’ Chinese partner. General Motors sells the Hongguang MPV in many parts of the word by rebadging it with the Chevrolet bow tie and the same will happen in India as well.
India, being a very unique market that simply loves its diesel engined cars will see a diesel engined heart for the Hongguang MPV, which will be called the Chevrolet Enjoy in the Indian car market. The Chevrolet Enjoy MPV in India will get the 1.3 Liter turbo diesel engine, that GM jointly developed with Fiat under the Jet Turbo Diesel project. Popularized by Fiat in India, as the Multijet engine, this diesel engine is found on a range of cars sold in India and the Enjoy MPV will be the latest car to be powered by this hugely popular turbo diesel engine.
Under the hood of the Enjoy, this engine is expected to churn out 77 Bhp of peak power and 210 Nm of peak torque. The engine will be mated to a five speed manual gearbox as standard. The Enjoy MPV will be positioned as GM India’s upmarket MPV option, occupying the space above the Tavera MUV. The Enjoy MPV is expect to undercut the likes of the Toyota Innova and the Mahindra Xylo in terms of pricing, although it is also a 7 seater. The Enjoy MPV could be pitted straight at the Ertiga in terms of pricing. Top end variants of the Enjoy are expected to get twin airbags, ABS and EBD.
Meanwhile, GM India is all set to launch the Sail sedan in India. The Sail sedan will be launched on the 1st of February 2013. The car will be available in both petrol and turbo diesel engine options. The addition of the diesel engine to the Sail is an India-specific move given the fact that the China-spec Sail makes do with petrol power. The Sail sedan’s price is expected to begin at around the INR 6 lakh mark. The Sail Sedan’s chief competitors include the Toyota Etios, the Ford Fiesta Classic and the Tata Manza.
