Chevrolet India charges into 3 lakh unit sales

GM’s first footstep on Indian soil was with the Opel brand which did a fairly good job of familiarizing the Indian customer with the GM range. However, Opel didn’t turn into a smash hit brand name which was evident from the so-so sales of both the Astra and the Corsa, the latter being used as a platform for a range of three cars. We haven’t forgotten the blink-and-you-miss-it cameo of the Vectra.

As a result, GM strategists went back to their war rooms, drove a couple of Corvettes and the apple dropped to their craniums initiating a question – “Why don’t we introduce the Chevy?” To cut a long story short, Chevrolet arrived in India and it was decision well taken.

Chevrolet brand crossed the three lakh landmark recently and though it took seven years for the logo to populate India, the milestone is deserves a mention considering the premium positioning of their cars. In India, the Chevy spirit is carried forward by Spark, Beat, Aveo, Aveo U-VA, Optra, Cruze, Tavera and Captiva.

“Launched in 2003, Chevrolet has become one of the most popular and the fastest growing automotive brands in the country, having sold over 3,00,000 cars in India,” General Motors India (GMI) said in a statement.

This year has been a bearer of good sales for GM with March 2010 posting the best sales the company has ever registered. A total of 11,330 units drove off GM showrooms powered by the huge demand for Spark and Beat.
