General Motors India will replace the Aveo U-VA hatchback and the Aveo sedan with the Sail hatchback and sedan twins sometime in 2012. Chevrolet Sail hatchbacks and sedans have already begun doing the testing rounds on Indian roads, albeit with plenty of camouflage. Both the cars are models that are already on sale in China and have Chinese underpinnings. The U-VA and Aveo incidentally had Korean underpinnings and are actually models developed by the now defunct Korean automaker, Daewoo.

Here is a latest sighting of the Chevrolet Sail hatchback from Nashik. The Chevrolet Sail hatchback is expected to arrive with a 1.2 Liter S-TEC petrol engine and a 1.3 Liter Multijet/JTD turbo diesel engine, which General Motors jointly developed along with Fiat. While the same diesel engine will be retained in the Sail sedan, the petrol engine could see a larger 1.4 liter S-TEC unit. The spy shots of the Sail hatchback are courtesy a Team-Bhpian who snapped them on the Nasik-Pune highway, near Sangamner.

Both these products are badly needed by General Motors India as the automaker’s products in the B+ segment hatchback space and the C segment sedan space are simply outdated when compared to the competition. The Sail hatchback and sedan will therefore be expected to add the much needed freshness to GM India’s portfolio. Also, the presence of diesel engines in these cars will be another major boost as both the Aveo and the U-VA suffered at the hustings due to not having diesel engined variants.

We are not quite sure whether General Motors would display these cars at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo. Any which ways, 2012 would the year when both the Sail sedan and hatchback variants would hit the Indian market, expanding the constantly growing Indian hatchback and sedan market. Expect the hatchback o be priced between 4-6 Lakhs while the Sedan could carry a price of 6-8 Lakhs, to compete with the likes of the Etios-Manza-Dzire.
