Fuel prices are skyrocketing and the car world is responding going small or electric. India is where the small car action really is and yet another entrant to this highly crowded segment will be the Chevrolet Sail Hatchback. General Motors India brought in a bunch of Chevrolet Sail Hatchbacks and Notchbacks for a cross section of the Indian car buying populace to try out and tell GM how the cars feel. The folks who sampled the Sail Notchback and Hatchback were suitably impressed and hence GM India plans to usher in both these cars to the great Indian car market.

The hatchback could share the Beat’s 1.2 Liter S-TEC petrol engine while GM’s 1.3 Liter SDE diesel engine could also make it’s way into this car’s engine bay. Another diesel engine possibility is the 1 Liter diesel engine GM India is developing for the Chevrolet Beat, that will also see a 2011 launch. when launched sometime in 2011, the Chevrolet Sail Sedan might take on the likes of the Fiat Grande Puntos and the Volkswagen Polos of the world, and for it to succeed in the midst of tough adversaries such as these, the Sail Hatchback would need that something extra.

All said, the Chevrolet Sail isn’t a name unknown to Indians attuned to the happenings of automobile world as once upon a time, a hatchback variant of the Opel Corsa was christened the Open Corsa Sail. And like most Opels in India that never managed to take off, the then Opel Corsa Sail bombed miserably though it was a car that definitely deserved a better sun at the hustings. Will GM India get lucky with the Chevrolet Sail? That, only time will tell.
