Chevrolet Spark Diesel in the works!

Here’s a revelation that could potentially give the current class leader Maruti Alto a stiff challenge. General Motors India’s Vice President P. Balendran has just announced that GM India will outfit the Chevrolet Spark with a 1 Liter CRDI Diesel engine. From what we know about GM’s Diesel 1 Liter engine, it will displace about 936cc as it basically is an in house chopped up, three cylinder version of the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet diesel engine.

Here’s what Mr Balendran had to say,

We will be launching(Smartech II Engine) it in the Spark too which will also get a 1-litre diesel engine soon.

The engine which is touted to develop around 56 Bhp of power and 140-150 Nm of torque will first power the Chevrolet Beat Diesel which weighs in at about 960 kilograms. This factor may make the 936cc diesel engine a little underpowered for the Beat Diesel. The Spark on the other hand weighs just 840 kilograms and this engine in the Spark might just prove to be both sprightly as well as ultra frugal considering the lower weight it has to lug around.

We’re hoping GM India does not detune the engine further to differentiate the Spark Diesel from the Beat Diesel. While GM India has not specified any launch date for the diesel version of the Spark, we feel that it would be a great move by them if they manage to bring in the Spark Diesel by the end of this year along with an 800cc low priced Spark petrol variant to take on the mighty Maruti Alto.

Still GM has not launched Beat Diesel and PS LPG variant of Spark has been discontinued. Let’s see when spark diesel is coming?
