Deal sealed; Fiat to supply 100,000 Multijet diesel engines to Maruti Suzuki! EDIT: 100,000 engines each year for 3 years!

After months of talk about Fiat supplying 1 lakh 1.3 Liter Multijet diesel engines to Maruti Suzuki, the deal has been signed. This supply will happen over a period of the next three years(EDIT: 100,000 engines per year for 3 years making it 300,000 engines). The 1,248cc four cylinder Multijet diesel engine that will be supplied to Maruti Suzuki will have a power output of 75 Bhp and a torque output of 190 Nm. This engine will feature a fixed geometry turbocharger. The strong points of the Fiat Multijet engine are its punchy performance, good reliability and high fuel economy, both factors which have given Maruti Suzuki diesel cars a huge competitive advantage.

Fiat Multijet 1.3 liter TurboDiesel Engine

Coming to think of it, the Multijet engine is a national engine of sorts. How else do you explain the use of this engine in no less than 11 cars across four brands in India, with more to come in the coming days. To give you a full perspective of which all cars use the Multijet engine, the Maruti Swift, the Ritz, the Dzire sedan, the Dzire compact sedan, the Ertiga and the SX4 all use the 1.3 liter multijet diesel engines. Coming to Tata Motors, the Vista hatchback and the Manza sedan use these engines. Fiat by itself uses this engine in the Grande Punto hatchback and the Linea sedan.

Over the next couple of months, the facelifted Premier Rio will also use this engine. Also, the same engine, albeit with General Motors’ small diesel engine(SDE) branding will be used in not one or two, but three cars, the Sail hatchback, the Sail sedan and the Wuling MPV. So, by the end of 2012, you could see almost 15 cars, all aimed at the volumes segment running on the Multijet diesel engine in various states of tune. Meanwhile, here is the joint statement issued by Fiat India and Maruti Suzuki regarding the engine supply,

Fiat India Automobiles Ltd (FIAL) will supply up to one lakh 1.3 litre MultiJet 75hp SDE engines per year to Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) starting from January 2012 for a period of three years. The production for MSIL will start in the fourth week of January.
