New details about next generation 2013 Skoda Octavia(Laura) emerge

The 2013 Skoda Octavia(Known as the Laura in India) will be unveiled for the first time in November 2012. The car will be larger than the outgoing Laura, to measure in at about 4.8 meters in length. The increase in length would allow Skoda to position an upmarket version of the Rapid in place of the current Octavia/Laura. The next generation Octavia will be based on the Volkswagen MQB platform, which will also underpin a range of Volkswagen front wheel drive cars like the 2013 Volkswagen Golf Mark VII, the Audi A3 and the Seat Leon models.

The MQB platform sharing will also mean that the next generation Octavia will share plenty of parts with Volkswagen group car models along with sharing production facilities. So, expect the likes of the Golf, Audi A3 and the Octavia to be produced side by side in Volkswagen group facilities. Also, engine sharing will be prevalent amongst these cars. Coming to the case of the 2013 Octavia, cylinder deactivation technology is expected to make it onto the car in the form of the 1.4 Liter TFSI turbo petrol engine that will make its debut on the Golf Mark7.

Cylinder deactivation technology, which essentially means that two cylinders in the four cylinder engine will be shut off during cruising, will cut fuel consumption and tail pipe emissions by a big margin. The entry level diesel engine on the 2013 Octavia is expected to be the 1.6 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine, one which is currently used on the likes of the Skoda Rapid and the Volkswagen Vento. However, expect this engine to come in a higher state of tune, with more power and torque for the next generation Octavia. Also, the new Octavia will be lighter than the current version, making for better performance and fuel economy.

Also anticipated is that the larger size of the new Octavia would allow Skoda to build a more premium version of the car, occupying the space that the current Superb is positioned at. The Superb could also move up the chain in terms of equipment and luxury levels, befitting its status as the flagship model in the Skoda range. In essence, the 2013 Octavia is a very important model for Skoda, in that it will rejig the positioning of many cars in the automakers future line up. Expect the new Octavia to be marginally pricier than the current version.
