Mahindra-Reva has officially christened the NXR all electric hatchback, as the E2O, with E standing for energy while O signifies oxygen. So, E2O means energy to oxygen. While the launch of the 2013 E2O all electric hatchback will happen soon, we’re yet to get an official date from Mahindra-Reva. The E2O all electric hatchback is powered by a 48 Bhp electric motor that is juiced up by lithium ion batteries. The Reva E2O will go 100 Kms on each charge of the lithium ion batteries. Interestingly, the range has dropped quite significantly: From 160 Kms that was claimed a while ago to the latest figure of 100 Kms.
We’re wondering whether Mahindra has reduced the number of batteries in the lithium ion battery stack as a trade off between range and cost. Lithium Ion batteries are quite expensive and make for a big chunk of the final price of an electric car. So, electric car makers constantly grapple with the range of their vehicles vis-a-vis the cost of the lithium ion batteries. The E2O is capable of a top speed of 105 Kph with brisk acceleration to boot given the fact that electric cars make maximum torque right from standstill.
The Mahindra Reva E2O can be charged from any 15 Amp household socket, making charging the E2O a breezy affair. While a solar charging option does exist, it will be available at an additional cost. The E2O comes with a seating capacity for four adults, making it a practical proposition for city slickers who’d want the versatility of being able to ferry four adults as and when the situation calls for. The car is targeted at city hatchback buyers looking for a convenient yet economical means of transport. Running costs of the E2O is expected to be just a fraction of what a petrol or diesel hatchback costs to run.
Talking of convenience, the E2O comes with a CVT gearbox which means that you don’t have to shift gears to get going. Point and shoot; That’s what the Mahindra E2O is all about. The Mahindra Reva E2O is expected to be priced between INR 5 to 6 lakhs. Mahindra is expected to offer a leasing option for the lithium ion battery stack, making the ownership of the E2O more cost effective. The E2O all-electric hatchback will be built at the spanking new Mahindra-Reva production facility at Electronics City, Bangalore.
