The empire strikes back: Gordon Murray’s one lakh wonder car T.25 unveiled

When he isn’t designing the world’s fastest cars like the Mclaren F1 Super car, the South Afrikaneer Gordon Murray tried to figure out a way to put the world on wheels. After plenty of figuring, here is what the design guru has come up with. The T.25 Micro Car which like the Tata Nano will cost 1 Lakh Rupees or 1212 Pound Sterling.

Gordon Murray, who has been designing one of the fastest cars in the world seems to have left his deep imprint of speed and performance on the T.25 Micro Car as well. So, you get a peaky 51 Bhp, 660cc three potter that will ensure that the pocket sized dynamo does a nought to hundred in under 17 seconds. While that isn’t too much of an ask from a car that weighs in at 600 kilos, how about traction control, ABS, ESP and Air Bags thrown in?

While these of course will cost extra, lets get down to the bare basic business end of the spectrum which in other words is seating capacity. Inspired by the Mclaren F1′s 1+2 seating design, Gordon Murray has adapted the same for the T.25, and hence the T.25 will seat three people. This is clearly where the gorgeous Tata Nano trumps the T.25 but then again, till the T.25 goes into serial production, it will remain more of an ugly Autorickshaw like concept than a genuine production reality.

The Nano wins hands down unfortunately – 4 seats, and better crash resistance as it has passed European crash testing, and the European version is expected to get a 4 Star Euro-NCAP rating with a driver’s airbag fitted.

The car is not a bad attempt, but it is almost impossible for a small manufacturer to produce a car which is cost competitive with a volume producer. That is why small car builders go for niche designs or supercars which are not price sensitive.
