The Fiat 500 becomes the first Fiat to get the brand new Fiat MultiAir engine
Fiat SPA has just pulled the wraps off the revolutionary Multi Air twin cylinder engine that has been the point of great talk over the past few months. The first Multi Air engines has just debuted on the Fiat 500 Supermini, customer deliveries of which are set to begin in September this year. The car isn’t anything new, so let’s talk about the engine that is making all the waves.
The Multi Air engine can be likened to the variable valve technology that Honda and Toyota use but with one major difference. Fiat’s Multi Air technology uses a combination of electronics and hydraulics to arrive at the variable valve lift technology which brings to the table plenty of benefits. The Multi Air technology ensures that more power can be extracted from a smaller engine even as fuel economy and carbon emissions can be curtailed to a large extent. Think of it as an engine that gives you maximum power when you floor the throttle while it sips the least amount of fuel when you choose to cruise steadily on the highways even as the engine size and weight gets reduced greatly.
That, in a nutshell is what the Multi Air can do for you. While Fiat has unveiled the twin cylinder multi air engines in a single capacity of 900cc that can produce 65 Bhp when naturally aspirated, which can go up to 105 Bhp when turbocharged, the future could see a lot more engine with varying capacities. What remains to be seen is how smooth the twin cylinder engine equipped with a balancer shaft manages to be. And is all of this relevant to India, oh yes sir, it certainly is as in the future, we also could get MultiAir engines on popular Fiat cars like the Punto and Linea. Keep an eye out for this technology that promises so much with so less. Meanwhile, here’s a nice little video that explains what Fiat’s Multi Air Engine technology is all about.
