Fiat India is bringing its high performance car tuning division, Abarth, to the country in 2013. Abarth tuned cars and car tuning packages could be made available through independent outlets in India. Having its origins as an Italian racing team, the Abarth brand name was acquired by Fiat in 1971, and ever since the Abarth brand has been used for Fiat’s racing efforts and more recently as the Italian car maker’s high performance car tuning division. Apart from massaging Fiat cars to go faster, Abarth also produces a range of body kits and other accessories for Fiat’s car range.
Internationally, Fiat sells three of its cars under the Abarth moniker, in the form of the Abarth Punto Evo, the Abarth 500 and the Abarth 500 C. While the Abarth Punto is a high performance version of the Fiat Grande Punto hatchback, the Abarth 500 and 500 C models are the high performance version of Fiat’s iconic 500 series of small cars. With the advent of the Abarth range in India, it seems like Fiat is targeting the Mini range of sporty hatchbacks as the Fiat Abarth 500 and the Fiat Abarth 500 C can be used to compete with the Mini Cooper and the Mini Convertible. Meanwhile, here’s a round up of the Abarth range of cars.
The Abarth Punto Evo SS gets a massaged 1.4 Liter turbo petrol engine that outputs a peak power of 180 Bhp while the peak torque of 270 Nm is available right from 3,000 rpm. This engine endows the Punto with some very nippy performance as the car will sprint from standstill to 100 Kph in a quick 7.5 seconds, to a heady top speed of 215 Kph. The car also gets a driver-selectable Sport mode in which the car’s engine, braking and steering gets sportier at the flick of a switch. Apart from the more powerful engine, the Abarth kitted Fiat Punto SS hatchback gets tasty looking 18 inch alloy wheels and a sporty body kit.
The Abarth 500 is the sporty hardtop version of Fiat’s iconic 500 car model while the Abarth 500 C is the high performance convertible version. Both the Abarth 500 and 500 C models are powered by a 160 Bhp-230 Nm turbo petrol engine displacing 1.4 Liters. Both the Abarth 500 and the Abarth 500 C models come with sporty body kits and interior trims. These cars have been very well accepted by Fiat 500 buyers considering that one out of three new Fiat 500 buyers opt for the car with the Abarth treatment.
