Fiat India’s sub-Punto car in the works!
Even though Fiat India is giving the 2012 Indian Auto Expo the miss, the automaker is bullish on its Indian prospects and is thus working away at a sub Punto car, that it plans to launch in the Indian market in the future. Also, the new sub Punto small car that Fiat will launch will be from Fiat’s existing global small car platforms. Though a timeline for the launch isn’t on the horizon yet, Fiat India is working to customize one of Fiat’s global small cars to suit the Indian market, whose needs and differences like every other market are quite unique.
Theis leaves us wondering whether Fiat India will bring the Novo Fiat Palio, which has been launched on markets abroad or even perhaps the new Fiat Uno. Whatever may be the case, it is heartening to know that Fiat is still serious about the Indian market than merely being an engine supplier to other brands, which on the back of Fiat’s excellent Multijet diesel engines have gone on to become big sellers, even as Fiat has fallen behind. Another big concern is that of Fiat’s dealerships, which thus far have been in alliance with Tata Motors.
From 2012, Fiat will work towards establishing independent dealerships, which will give the brand the required impetus to capture back lost market share. Along with this, Fiat India will also open Fiat Caffes across big Indian cities to build the Fiat brand in India and bring Fiat enthusiasts closer. The first Fiat Caffe is all set to be inaugurated on the 6th of January 2012 at Delhi while the second will be launched in Pune shortly.

Fiat is reluctant to bring in its 1.6 multijet as of now. The new Uno is horrible in terms of looks. Indians are very particular about the looks. Punto Evo is the one they should be looking to introduce here…of course with a strong and independent sales/service backup.
