Ford’s EcoBoost range of turbo petrol engines have propelled the brand forward with a combination of perky performance and excellent fuel economy even as tail pipe emissions have been contained. The brand has also been winning global acclaim for its EcoBoost range of engines. The latest in the honors has come to Ford’s smallest turbo petrol engine, the 1 Liter, 3 cylinder EcoBoost turbo petrol engine, which is a marvel in itself, for it produces about 120 Bhp of peak power with peak torque coming in at 170 Nm, and an overboost function further pushing torque to 200 Nm.

The engine is also capable of delivering a fuel economy figure of over 19 Kmpl, which is quite outstanding for the power and torque it delivers. The 1 Liter Ecoboost turbo petrol engine has bagged three awards; best new engine, best sub-1-liter engine, and best overall engine. The engine is currently used on the 2012 Ford focus hatchback and in the coming months, will power the 2013 Ford EcoSport crossover, which is also expected to be launched in India during early 2013. The EcoBoost engine comes with a range of innovations that we’ve showcased to you through this story, a while ago.

The engine features turbocharging, variable valve timing and direct injection technologies to be one of the most technologically advanced 3 cylinder, small capacity petrol units in the world. The jury who selected the EcoBoost engine as the best engine in the world have particularly praised the almost-zero turbo lag of this engine, which means that it is superbly drivable. Negligible turbo lag also means that the small turbocharger that is fitted to this engine is perfectly matched. All in all, India will be eagerly awaiting this engine in the EcoSport crossover.

Turbo petrol engines are soon becoming the choice across automakers as the demand for higher fuel economy and lower tail pipe emissions is growing across the world. General Motors has its own range of turbo petrol engines going by the name EcoTec while Renault too has showcased a 900cc, 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine recently. BMW is another automaker betting big on 3 cylinder turbo petrol engines, with the 1.5 Liter, 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine that will be used in future BMW cars. Expect the breed of turbo petrol engines to further grow in the coming years.
