Ford Fiesta Hatchback not too likely for India in the near future, says Ford India!

2011 Ford Fiesta Hatchback

Alright folks, there have been a barrage of queries in our comments section from eager car buyers asking us whether Ford India will indeed launch the Ford Fiesta Hatchback. Recently, we got an opportunity to interact with the top honchos of Ford India, Mr Michael Boneham and Mr Nigel Wark at Delhi.

We posed the very same question of whether the Ford Fiesta Hatchback would see an Indian launch. Mr Boneham and Mr Wark said that Ford India, while understanding the eagerness of the Indian car buyer, for the Ford Fiesta Hatchback, does not have any plans to launch the car in the near future.

What they also reiterated is the fact that the Ford Fiesta Hatchback costs more to manufacture than the Fiesta Sedan mainly due to the larger roof and in a market like India, where expensive hatchbacks haven’t really found acceptance, the Fiesta Hatchback could go the way of the Jazz and become a major sales catastrophe for Ford.

That said, Ford India isn’t ruling out the Fiesta Hatchback completely as it continues to work on reducing the cost of producing the Fiesta Hatchback in India through a slew of cost cutting measures. Currently, feasibility studies are being conducted to see whether the Fiesta Hatchback can be launched in India at a later date.

So there, if you’re waiting for the Ford Fiesta Hatchback hoping that the car would be launched in 2011, we suggest that you look at other options like the Hyundai i20 and the Skoda Fabia as the Fiesta Hatchback will not be launched in 2011.

    Sunil,

A bigger roof means more metal and allied materials throughout, Right from the doors to the glass on the windows, etc. So, this is why the “Fiesta Hatchback” being comparable in size to the Sedan costs more is what the explanation given to us by a certain Ford India designer. Also, if you compare the prices of the Fiesta Sedan and the Fiesta Hatch in the US of A, the sedan costs lesser than the hatch. So, perhaps what the designer says has some truth to it.

    Cheers,

    Jay
