Ford India’s biggest launch for 2013 is expected to be the EcoSport compact crossover, a hotly anticipated compact SUV that will take on the likes of the Mahindra Quanto and the Renault Duster. Apart from the EcoSport, Ford India could give the Endeavour SUV a final facelift before the new generation model comes along to replace it. While the Endeavour facelift still continues to be in the realm of speculation, the EcoSport is confirmed for a launch in 2013. The EcoSport is expected to be launched in the middle of 2013 with a competitive price tag.
2013 Ford Ecosport Compact Crossover
Ford India is expected to play the value card with the EcoSport compact crossover given the fact that the EcoSport measures in at under 4 meters in length. This length of the EcoSport means that it qualifies for a lower duty figure owing to it being classified as a small car in India. With duty benefits of about INR 70,000, we expect the Ford EcoSport to undercut the Renault Duster’s price by a good margin. The EcoSport is a crossover that will be available in both petrol and diesel engine versions. The petrol variant of the EcoSport is also expected to be offered with a dual clutch automatic gearbox.
The petrol engine will be the 1 Liter-3 cylinder turbocharged unit. This engine produces 120 Bhp of peak power and 200 Nm of peak torque in overboost mode. Known to be both power packed as well as frugal, the EcoSport powered by the 1 Liter EcoBoost engine could come with an ARAI fuel economy figure of 17 Kmpl. The turbo diesel engine will be the 1.5 Liter TDCI unit. The diesel engine, which also powers the Fiesta sedan is expected to output 90 Bhp of peak power and 200 Nm of peak torque. Initially, the EcoSport is expected to be sold in front wheel drive guise.
Ford Endeavour SUV
The EcoSport is based on Ford’s B-Car platform, a global platform that also underpins the new Fiesta hatchback and sedan models. The crossover is slated to feature a high level of localization to keep the initial price low. With the EcoSport, Ford India could hark back to the value-pricing model that it first adopted with the Figo hatchback, and to great success. Coming to the Endeavour SUV facelift, expect to see minor cosmetic changes on the outside. Under the hood though, the 2.5 Liter and 3 Liter TDCI turbo diesel engines are expected to remain unchanged.
