Ford has lined up four new products for the European car market amidst difficult market conditions. The American automaker has lined up the 2013 Mondeo sedan and the facelifted 2013 Fiesta hatchback for a launch in the coming months. That said, the sedan market in Europe is contracting while the SUV market is growing as more car buyers are shifting towards the more butch and brawny SUVs, led by the crossovers, which offer sedan like drive and handling along with higher ground clearance and go-anywhere ability of the SUVs.
So, Ford has three new products in the SUV segment, in the form of the Kuga, the EcoSport and the Edge. The first of these SUVs to be launched in Europe would be the Kuga, after which the smaller EcoSport will follow. The EcoSport is a compact SUV that measures under 4 meters in length and is based on the Ford B-Car global platform which also underpins the Fiesta range of cars. The EcoSport will be an entry level SUV model for Ford in Europe with the crossover to offer a car like handling ability with high ground clearance and water wading ability.
An all wheel drive version of the EcoSport is expected to be the top of the line variant in the European car market. While the EcoSport is scheduled to be launched in Europe over the next 18 months, Ford has also planned a bigger SUV called the Edge, for the European market. The EcoSport, which has already been launched in Brazil is all set to enter China and India, in the next few months. So, Ford it seems is betting big on its latest entry level crossover, which could deliver big volumes for the brand. Ford is also taking the iconic Mustang to Europe, to be positioned as a brand building flagship model for the American brand.
Ford is also betting big on the EcoBoost turbo petrol engine range for the European market. These engines, which feature direct injection, turbo charging and variable valve timing, represent the new push by Ford for fuel efficient petrol engine technology, in consonance with the “Go Further” philosophy that the American automaker is now following to build more fuel efficient cars. The smallest of the EcoBoost range of turbo petrol engines, the 1 Liter, 3 cylinder unit will power the 2013 Fiesta hatchback, the all new Mondeo sedan and the EcoSport crossover for starters.
