Ford to triple production of EcoBoost line of turbopetrol engines in 2012!
Ford’s EcoBoost engine, a petrol motor that combines turbocharging, variable valve timing and direct injection technology is making is way into more and more Ford cars each passing month and this has led to Ford planning to triple the production of EcoBoost engines in 2012. In the Indian market, the EcoBoost engine will be first launched in the Ford EcoSport crossover that could debut in late 2012. Over the next few years, more and more Ford cars will get EcoBoost engines as demands for higher fuel economy and lower tail pipe emissions are increasing each passing year.
Along with the EcoBoost engine, which will now be available on no less than 11 Ford cars by the end of 2012, Ford will also begin producing more cars with another fuel saving-emission cutting technology, the start-stop function. Hybrids are also in Ford’s lng term plans as the all new Mondeo/Fusion sedan is set to debut with a hybrid version in the end of 2012. All these moves represents Ford’s all new “Go Further” branding philosophy, a philosophy that actually reflects on the higher fuel economy that all new Ford cars will offer through the EcoBoost engine technology.
Over the next couple of years, expect most petrol engines to feature turbocharging as emission norms tighten across the world. Turbocharging improved low end torque and power, thus eliminating frequent downshifts. This translates into higher fuel economy. Also, since turbocharging essentially uses exhaust gases to spin the turbine of the turbocharger, efficiency will be increased by reusing gases which otherwise would have been wasted. The other factor in favor of turbocharging is that it enable the use of smaller capacity-more fuel efficient engines, which can now produce the same amount of even higher power than larger engines, through forced induction.

Exhaust gases spin the turbine then gets treated at the CAT converter and leave via the exhaust pipe. I’m unable to understand how this helps with reducing tail pipe emmissions greatly. Kindly explain. thx.

True Jay, small capacity, direct injection turbo petrol seem to be the way ahead, that too in the weight advantage of 3 pots. BMrs are doing it, so are Ford. Marutis have been doing it all along. Of course, direct injectors and turbo charging will need to be added ;)
Hyundai though have developed the GDI, seem to have been able to turbo charge it only in concept (veloster). If they will develop a turbo 1.6 GDI producing about 150 hp in time for the Indian launch of the Elantra, wouldn’t the car be a stunner??!!
