General Motors India to launch the Captiva SUV in March 2012!

After unveiling this hotly anticipated SUV at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, General Motors India is all set to launch the 2012 Captiva SUV in March, this year. The Captiva SUV is a major facelift of the flagship product from General Motors India. The facelifted 2012 Captiva will come with changes not just to the interior and the exterior, but also under the hood. General Motors will plonk in a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine, producing a peak power of 185 Bhp and a peak torque of424 Nm. These figures will propel the Captiva to the very top in its segment when it comes to class leading power and torque figures.

The 2012 Captiva will also feature a full refresh in the interiors with the signature dual cockpit dashboard layout, which has come to become standard on all new cars from General Motors. The exteriors also get a big makeover with an all new front end and complete restyling all around. The Captiva will be available in all wheel drive and a six speed automatic gearbox. Like the current Captiva, the new model will also be brought into India through the completely built unit(CBU) route from South Korea. General Motors India will consider CKD assembly only if volumes perk up significantly.

Incidentally, the best selling luxury SUV in India, which sells 800-1000 units a month, is the Toyota Fortuner, and this SUV  is assembled in India through the CKD route. The Hyundai Santa Fe SUV is also being assembled in India, after initially being imported into the country as a CBU. With General Motors choosing to go the CBU way with the new Captiva, the SUV is expected to be priced between INR 20-22 lakhs. While CBUs command 60% import duty, import duty on CKD models is pegged at 30%. So, one can only imagine how competitively the Captiva can be priced if GM India chooses to go for CKD assembly. In March, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV will also be launched.
