General Motors India to showcase six new products/concepts at the 2010 Auto Expo
General Motors may be in deep trouble in it’s home market, the United States but in India it is going from strength to strength with it’s products selling very decently, especially at the lower end of the car market. Now, in a further reaffirmation of it’s seriousness in the Indian market, GM is all set to showcase six new products at the Auto Expo. Out of these six products, three will be car models that will be produced shortly and the other three will either be concepts or brand building cars for GM India. Let’s kick off this feature with what GM will sell in the Indian market shortly.
Chevrolet Spark Electric
Like we had reported earlier, GM India is all set to unveil the electric version of it’s entry level small car, the Chevrolet Spark. The Spark will feature two electric versions, one with the conventional lead acid battery and another with more expensive lithium ion batteries. The electric motor has been developed developed by GM India in association with the Indian electric car pioneer, Reva Limited. With this model, GM India hopes to compete with the other electric cars that will be unveiled by manufacturers like Tata, Maruti and Hyundai, who themselves are very serious about electric cars.
Chevrolet Aveo CNG
The Aveo too will go green at the 2010 Auto Expo with a CNG version of the mid size sedan being all set for an Indian launch. This option might just be the spark that could ignite the sales of the Aveo which never really took off in a big way. With the CNG version around, the well built Aveo could be well received by the Taxi segment. Coming to the looks front, a redesigned Aveo is very much on the cards. Along with the Aveo, the U-VA too also is expected to get a major face lift to improve it’s sagging sales.
Chevrolet Captiva Extreme
The Chevrolet Captiva managed to muster decent sales even though it didn’t set the sales charts afire. Though the Captiva is an extremely competitive SUV, GM India is sparing no effort to infuse some freshness into the Captiva and make it more desirable for the SUV buying crowd. For this, GM India is bringing in the Chevrolet Captiva Xtreme. The Chevrolet Captiva Xtreme will come with an automatic gearbox, new fog lamps, chrome inserts on the mirrors and roof bars. The engine however will remain the 148-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that powers the existing Captiva and Cruze.
Chevrolet Volt
Though GM India doesn’t seem to have any plans of launching the Chevrolet Volt in India currently, it might reconsider it’s plans to launch the Volt Hybrid in 2011, just after it’s US launch. In a bid to assess market reaction, GM India is planning to display the Chevrolet Volt at the 2010 Auto Expo. The Chevrolet Volt is scheduled to be launched in November, 2010 in the United States. The Chevrolet Volt Hybrid features a lithium ion battery powered electric motor which will work for the first 64 Kms. After this distance, electricity will be generated aboard the Volt with a small internal combustion engine which will act as a generator to keep the lithium ion batteries juiced up.
Chevrolet Camaro
If the Chevrolet Camaro is there at the 2010 Auto Expo, it is to show the Indians GM’s rich heritage of muscle cars. The Chevrolet Camaro embodies the real spirit of the true muscle cars GM was famous for in the fabulous fifties and the swinging sixties. The Chevrolet Camaro will sit proudly in the GM India stall at the 2010 Auto Expo cocking a snook at the other super cars and questioning drivers whether they hae it in them to tame the brute power and torque unleashed by the massive six Liter V8 under it’s long hood. Who knows, the Camaro might as well make it to Indian shores if enough people show interest in owning one.
Chevrolet WTCC Cruze
The Chevrolet WTCC Cruze is purely a brand building exercise by GM India. GM India is all set to display the world touring car championship model of the Cruze. Meanwhile, GM India are also anticipated to launch an automatic version of the Chevrolet Cruze at the 2010 Auto Expo. More details about the Chevrolet Cruze Automatic are posted elsewhere on this very blog.
