The Polo that is sold by Volswagen in India is built at Chakan, off Pune, where it shares its production line with the Skoda Fabia. Both the Polo and the Fabia share their underpinnings and most of their parts. Both cars come with petrol and turbo diesel engine options. The 1.2 Liter MPI petrol engine and the 1.2 Liter TDI turbo diesel engine are the two motors that are offered on the Polo and the Fabia.

While a five speed manual gearbox is standard on both these engines, Volkswagen is expected to launch an automatic variant of the Polo hatchback in the coming months. Also, Volkswagen India does have a plans of launching a bunch of new variants in the Polo line up. The first variant in this chain is expected to be a CNG-Petrol dual fuel version of the Polo. The CNG powered Polo will be aimed at buyers looking for lower running costs and a lower purchase price than the diesel powered variants of the Polo.

The CNG variants could boost sales of the Polo in the bigger cities of India, where CNG is freely available. Meanwhile, Volkswagen India has discontinued production of the 1.6 Liter-4 cylinder engined high performance Polo petrol due to poor sales. While being quite powerful with power and torque outputs of 105 Bhp-153 Nm, the 1.6 Liter petrol engine led to the Polo’s price going up by quite a bit as the bigger displacement engine meant that Volkswagen has to pay a higher excise duty to the Indian government.

The higher price, combined with the lower fuel economy of the Polo 1.6 were reasons for its low sales. Volkswagen India plans to relaunch the high performance version of the Polo with a 1.2 Liter TSI turbo petrol engine. The turbo petrol engine’s 1.2 liter capacity means that Volkswagen will be able to get the Polo qualified as a small car, even as the engine delivers great performance while also managing to return good fuel economy. The Polo 1.2 TSI is expected to be launched later this year.
