Hyundai i20 CRDI Diesel car loses a gear to become a 5 speed car, albeit with a minor price cut!
The six speed gearbox was a major selling point of the Hyundai i20 CRDI Diesel with Hyundai India going the extra mile to market this particular feature. True, it made cruising on highways at speeds over 100 Kph a very frugal affair as the extra cog meant that the 90 Bhp diesel engine spun at a lower rpm resulting in higher fuel economy.
Now though, Hyundai India has suddenly decided to delete the sixth gear from the Hyundai i20 CRDI diesel model. While Hyundai India hasn’t come out with an official announcement of the change in the gearbox of the Hyundai i20 Diesel yet, Hyundai dealers have confirmed to us that the i20 Diesel indeed is now available only with a five speed gearbox.
Prices though have reduced by around INR 10 thousand for the five speed gearbox. So, Hyundai India has ostensibly passed on the price benefit to the customers. So, there isn’t any question of Hyundai indulging in cost cutting. However, there seems to be another angle to this sudden change in the gearbox of the Hyundai i20 CRDI.
The Hyundai Verna Fluidic has taken the market by storm and incidentally comes with the same six speed gearbox that the i20 Diesel also used to feature. Apparently, production constraints has forced the Hyundai India to cut down the extra cog on the Hyundai i20 Diesel, in favor of the Hyundai Verna Fluidic.
This move is plausible as the waiting period for the Verna Fluidic Diesel, in many cases is said to stretch to almost 6 months. The other reason of course could be the fact that Hyundai has indulged in this measure to ensure that the Hyundai i20 Diesel, through this minor price cut can be made more competitive in the face of competition building up as the Maruti Suzuki Swift is set to be launched today and the Honda Jazz Facelift is due to be launched in a few days.
