The Beijing Auto show saw Hyundai world premiering the 2011 Hyundai Verna amidst a lot of expectations from Indians as to when Hyundai India will bring the Verna to Indian shores. While it seems that Hyundai India will indeed launch the 2011 Hyundai Verna in early 2011, here’s a shocker.

According to Autocar-India, the 2011 Hyundai Verna could cost between INR 12-13 Lakhs, thus putting it straight in the segment that the erstwhile Hyundai Elantra belonged to.

Now, badge value is something that is given huge credence in the upper C segment and hence Hyundai never really managed to tap this segment even though it had a terrific product in the Hyundai Elantra, which in diesel guise beat the Toyota Corolla hollow in almost all departments. Now pitting the 2011 Hyundai Verna in this segment will a bad, bad move as the 2011 Verna will have to take on the mighty Toyota Corolla Altis and the stealth fighter Honda Civic, both brands with tremendous badge values and bigger engines too. So, this isn’t too happening.

While the 2011 Hyundai Verna seems to pack in a bunch of kit and plenty of pizzaz on the look-at-me front, the pricing could be it’s Achilles heel. If indeed it does manage to see a launch at the pricing level, what will happen to the existing Hyundai Verna? Can the existing Verna soldier on unchanged even as Ford comes in with the 2011 Fiesta and GM India with the next gen Aveo vying for car buyers’ attention? Highly improbable, we say.

This prompts us to think that the next crop of mid size sedans could either cost above INR 10 Lakhs or that the 2011 Hyundai Verna could be an Elantra replacement. While Hyundai India could hit the localization spree with a vengeance, we’ll take the sides with history, which has shown a steady rise in car prices to the extent of segments being breached and new ones being created. Hence, our bet would be on the 2011 Hyundai Verna costing significantly higher than the existing Verna. About the Hyundai Elantra’s resurrection, the 2011 Hyundai Avante, it will certainly be.
