ICB Exclusive: Volkswagen Polo Cross caught testing in India

Team ICB’s roving eye in the sky, EarthFusion, is on the prowl and we’ve just followed up our scoop about the Polo Cross hitting the testing circuit with some conclusive evidence. A test mule of the Volkswagen Polo Cross was caught testing early today at Chakan, off Pune. The Volkswagen Cross Polo is to the Volkswagen Polo hatchback what the Skoda Fabia Scout is to the Skoda Fabia hatchback. Essentially, the Cross Polo adds a modicum of macho to the Polo hatchback by means of body cladding, taller wheels, roof rails and restyled front and rear bumpers. It remains to be seen whether Volkswagen India gives the Polo Cross a higher ground clearance to go with the car’s butch new looks.

Engines are expected to remain unchanged on the Volkswagen Polo Cross, with the 1.2 Liter MPI 75 Bhp-100 Nm petrol engine and the 1.2 Liter TDI 75 Bhp-185 Nm turbo diesel engine doing duty. As Volkswagen has introduced the 1.2 TSI turbo petrol motor on the Polo hatchback, it remains to be seen whether the more powerful engine mated to the 7 speed DSG gearbox would be offered on the Polo Cross. Notably, the Fabia Scout shares its engines and transmissions with the regular Fabia hatchback and this is expected to continue with the Polo Cross as well. Meanwhile, here’s our exclusive rendering of the 2013 Volkswagen Polo Cross, again put together by EarthFusion.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen India is clear about strengthening its existing portfolio of cars with new variants, refreshes and facelifts. The Polo Cross is one such new variant. This strategy of Volkswagen India will continue up to 2015, after which the German car giant is expected to come up with all new products for the Indian car market. A new 1.5 Liter turbo diesel engine is the next big change expected on the Polo range of entry level hatchbacks from Volkswagen.
