The iconic Ford Mustang pony car could get a inline 4 cylinder EcoBoost turbopetrol engine soon!
Just ahead of the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, Ford was busy celebrating the success that the EcoBoost range of turbo petrol engines has been for the brand. To put things into perspective, no less than 100,000 brawny Ford F150 pick up trucks with the EcoBoost engine have been sold across the United States and going forward, Ford’s future will be inextricably tangled with the EcoBoost engine making its way into almost all Ford cars in the coming years.
In the next few months, when a new version of the Ford Mustang makes its debut, it could feature a fuel sipping in-line four version of the EcoBoost petrol engine. Rumors have it that the inline four engine could be picked up from the Ford Focus ST. This engine is a two liter unit producing 250 Bhp of peak power. This apart, Ford does have a 365 Bhp, V6 EcoBoost unit that it uses on the likes of the Ford Taurus and the F150 pick up truck.
Turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing are the three technologies that go into every Ecoboost engine, to deliver a blend of high performance, high fuel economy and low emissions. While this might be hard to stomach for Mustang fans who’ve always associated the iconic pony car with big naturally aspirated V8s burbling under the hood, the changing times necessitate such a move.
Turbo petrols are the way forward for petrol engines across the globe as emission norms continually tighten with demand for fuel efficiency becoming more and more acute as fuel prices shoot through the roof. For the Indian market too, Ford is lining up an Ecoboost engine, the smallest ever at that, in the upcoming EcoSport Crossover. The EcoSport will feature a 1 liter, three cylinder EcoBoost engine, when it debuts in India later this year.
