German luxury car giant Mercedes Benz has just kick started production of the CLA sedan at its Hungarian factory in Kecskemét. The CLA sedan is the third car to be built on the MFA platform, after the B-Class and the A-Class hatchbacks. The production-spec CLA sedan was first showcased at this year’s Detroit Motor Show and with the production now beginning, the next few months will see the car being launched in various international markets across the globe. Bookings for the car are now open in Europe.
2014 Mercedes Benz CLA Sedan
In Europe, customer deliveries of the CLA sedan are expected to begin in April 2013 while the United States will get this car in September 2013. The 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA sedan is expected to be launched in India by the end of this year. Mercedes Benz India is expected to assemble the CLA sedan in India through the completely knocked down(CKD) route. The car will join the likes of the B-Class and A-Class hatchbacks, both of which are expected to be sold in India by the time the CLA arrives. Currently, Mercedes Benz India sells the B-Class petrol hatchback in India with plans afoot, of launching the diesel variant.
In the coming months, both petrol and diesel variants of the A-Class sports hatchback will be launched in India. Coming back to the CLA sedan, the car will be positioned under the C-Class sedan, as Mercedes Benz India’s entry level sedan. The estimated price for the CLA sedan sold in India could begin at about INR 25 lakhs, making it the least priced luxury sedan amongst those sold by the Teuton trio of Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz. The CLA sedan shares many parts with the A-Class hatchback, including the interiors’ design. Also, the engine line up is shared.
So, expect the CLA sedan to be sold in India to get turbo petrol and turbo diesel engine options. A 1.6 Liter turbo petrol engine and a 1.8 liter turbo diesel engine are the two engines that the India-spec CLA sedan is expected to come with. The car will be loaded with safety features and creature comforts given the fact that Mercedes Benz is serious about offering a high amount of kit in cars based on the MFA platform as the car maker seeks to sell these cars under the “affordable luxury” strategy. Transmission options will include a 6 speed manual gearbox and a 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. While front wheel drive will be standard on the 2014 CLA sedan, international markets in snow prone regions are expected to get the all wheel drive option.
