Weeks from now, Mercedes Benz could unveil their latest car model based on the MFA platform, the GLA Compact SUV. Given that the entry level crossover segment plays host to best selling SUVs like the BMW X1, the Audi Q3 and the latest upstart, the Volvo V40 Cross Country, Mercedes Benz is already a little late to the party. Better late than later, Mercedes Benz plans to make amends by having a tight schedule for the GLA compact SUVs market entry. The GLA compact SUV is expected to be showcased in concept guise in a few weeks from now, at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show.
The production version of the 2014 Mercedes Benz GLA compact SUV could see an official unveiling at the fag end of the year, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. A 2014 launch in most countries across the globe is what Mercedes Benz seems to be looking at. Essentially an A-Class sports hatchback on stilts with butch styling to go with its crossover leanings, the Mercedes Benz GLA will share plenty of parts with the A-Class. The sharing will include the MFA underpinnings and front wheel drive mode as standard. The flexibility of the MFA platform will mean that the GLA compact crossover will also get an all wheel drive system on the higher variants.
Turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines will be shared with other cars in the MFA line up. The A-Class, B-Class and the CLA class models will also share their 6 speed manual gearboxes and the 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearboxes with the GLA compact SUV. Eventually, the GLA crossover is expected to arrive into India, a crucial car market in which Mercedes Benz needs fresh blood in its car line up to spur sales. Like the rest of the MFA car line up that the German car brand has lined up for India, the GLA will also be assembled through the CKD route at Mercedes Benz India’s Chakan assembly unit.
Expect the price of the GLA crossover to match of better the likes of the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3. The Mercedes Benz GLA will be the fourth MFA platform based car to be launched in India, afte the B-Class, A-Class and CLA sedan. So, the appetite of the well heeled India luxury car buyer will be suitably whetted when the GLA arrives to India sometime in 2014 or early 2015.
