Mahindra & Mahindra is making a compact SUV. That is stale news. What isn’t stale are the bunch of specifications that have managed to tumble out of the Mahindra’s Chakan facility near Pune.
Our sources tell us that Mahindra’s latest product, the yet-to-be-named Compact SUV will sit in the segment below the Scorpio and mainly target small car buyers who are interested in a compact SUV, a-la-Premier Rio.
Mahindra, for sure won’t try to emulate the quality levels of the Premier Rio, which has been dismal to say the least. Meanwhile, the engine options will include a three cylinder 1.5 liter diesel and a 1.2 liter petrol.
The diesel could be an offshoot of the 2.2 Liter CRDe diesel mill that the Scorpio and the Xylo currently run on, albeit in different states of tune. With the Compact SUV, Mahindra plans to target dimensions of under 4.2 meters and thus make full use of the excise benefits that cars under 4.2 meters qualify for. Now, lets hope that Mahindra manages to add a neat 4WD option to this compact SUV which is expected to cost under INR 6 Lakhs. All said, we’re close to two years away from production. But, as someone rightly said, time flies. Stay glued to this space.
