Mahindra to launch Verito Compact sedan in early 2013
When Mahindra launched the facelifted version of the Verito sedan weeks ago, the car looked better than ever before with the facelift doing quite a bit to enhance the plain Jane looks of the older version. Also, with the interiors getting a once over, the Verito in diesel guise is a fitting alternative to folks too bored by the oh-so-yesterday looks of the Toyota Etios sedan. While the Verito is a good value buy in the market, Mahindra will launch a lower priced compact sedan version of the car in early 2013. The Verito compact sedan is expected to be the least priced Mahindra sedan in India.
The Verito compact sedan will sit below the Maruti Swift Dzire compact sedan by undercutting the latter by a big margin and is expected to give the Tata Indigo eCS some stiff competition. Like other car makers have done so, Mahindra is expected to chop off the boot of the Verito sedan, for the compact sedan to measure in at under 4 meters in length. The wheelbase though would remain the same, thus ensuring no sacrifice in the roominess of the car for its occupants. The downside though, will be the smaller boot, which will not be able to match the capacious boot of the full sized Verito sedan.
Due to the shorter length of under 4 meters, the 2013 Verito compact is expected to be priced about INR 40,000 lower than the full sized sedan variant. This would make the Verito compact compete with the B+ segment hatchbacks in the Indian car market like the Maruti Swift and the Hyundai i20. Though the Verito CS will be a generation older than these hatchbacks, sedans(compact sedans included) come with the snob value of being a more rounded car than a hatchback, which is still considered a small car by the average car buyer on the street.
So, Mahindra will be hoping to capitalize on this factor with the 2013 Mahindra Verito compact sedan aimed at value conscious city car buyer. Expect the 1.5 Liter K9K turbo diesel engine, good for 65 Bhp-160 Nm to continue doing duty in the compact sedan version of the Verito. This diesel engine is highly acclaimed for its turbo lag free response along with high fuel economy and has established itself firmly as a reliable motor in the thousands of Logan/Verito cabs doing duty in Indian cities. Expect the diesel version of the Verito compact sedan to begin at a price tag of INR 5.7 lakhs.

Though this is an old article, I just want to point out that till now there is no further news about any sort of versions based on the Verito. Moreover, I honestly feel that Mahindra should use their own power-trains in future so as to bring down the costs of ownership & also enhance the ease of ownership. Presently, with the K9K engine, the parts do not come cheap as they have to be sourced from Renault & on most occasions, they are not easily available. The engine is reliable, but then so are the engines from the competition. The 1.3 MJD, the 1.4 TDCi (Ford) & the 1.4 D4D are equally reliable & they are not plagued with issues pertaining to excessive spare part costs or non-availability.
Dear Prakhar,
The Verito CS is coming in early 2013. On more than one occasion, Mahindra’s top management has confirmed this development to Team ICB’s correspondents. Your thoughts about higher localization for the Verito is bang on the target. We agree with you on the fact that the Verito is a reliable and low maintenance car but costs quite a bit to repair when parts fail/accidents occur.
Cheers,
Jay
