Mahindra Mini Xylo and the Reva NXR: Mahindra’s next big launches!

While the Mahindra XUV500 Crossover SUV has given Mahindra a fair bit of  attention as an automaker capable of making a superb crossover vehicle with a tight development budget that hasn’t exceeded INR 550 crore, the real volume spinner that could give entry level sedans and B+ segment hatchbacks a real run for the money is the Mahindra Mini Xylo Mini MPV, that is scheduled for a launch sometime in 2012, perhaps even at the upcoming 2012 Indian Auto Expo. Another product that could put the bang back into electric cars is the Mahindra Reva NXR electric vehicle.

Before we give you a lowdown on the Mahindra’s next two big products, let’s look at how much the firm spends to develop new products, that allows it to price its products so competitively. While Mahindra priced the XUV500 SUV at a killer base price of INR 10.8 Lakhs, few know about the costs that the automaker incurred to develop this model from grounds up. Mahindra spent INR 550 Crores over a period of over 2 years to develop the Mahindra XUV500 SUV from ground up. Contrast this to Hyundai India spending over 900 Crores to develop the Hyundai Eon Small car, which in itself is considered to be a low amount for new product development, it is easy to see how frugal Mahindra has been with new product development.

This gives Mahindra an immediate advantage in pricing, which reflects in the ultra competitive pricing that the firm has managed to come up with, for almost all its products. The Mahindra XUV500 SUV’s killer pricing, even though introductory, meant that Mahindra is sitting on over 10,000 bookings within weeks of the SUV’s launch, so much so that four months of production has been sold out forcing the automaker to defer fresh bookings until the existing demand is met. The Mahindra Mini Xylo, which essentially is a cut price and smaller version of the Mahindra Xylo MPV could also benefit for lower development costs.

The Mahindra Mini Xylo will be powered by a 1.5 liter, three cylinder, common rail turbo diesel engine that is derived from the existing range of Mahindra CRDI turbo diesel engines. The Mahindra Mini Xylo will seat five adults and is expected to be a genuine alternative to folks who want a five seat MPV that can be an effective alternate to hig end hatchbacks and entry level sedans. So, a starting price of under 5 Lakhs could be where the Mini Xylo starts off at, thus creating a brand new segment of compact MUVs in the Indian car market.

Reva NXR Electric Car

Coming to the Mahindra Reva NXR, this the the electric car that will have almost everything that the previous Revas lacked. Built with high levels of customer feedback going into the car, the Reva NXR is a genuine four seater electric car that will be the most powerful Reva yet, and one that will have the maximum range too. A top speed of 104 Kph and a range of 160 kilometers per charge means that the Reva NXR will be rapid enough for city runs while having enough range to manage the odd run to the outskirts. A price of INR 4-5 Lakhs could make the Reva NXR a genuinely ultra frugal, low emission option for city dwellers who want a practical and affordable electric car. Early 2012 is when the Reva NXR is scheduled for an Indian launch.

Can anyone who had looked at the mini xylo, say whether this vehicle looks like chopped off xylo with a smaller tyres or it is a genuine smaller version of it ?

Mahindras pl. listen xylo is not a huge success because of it’s dimensions. The vehicle looks thin and tall. Mini xylo should have proportionate dimensions and a good engine with a decent interiors. This will be a game changer in indian market and a very good alternative to marutis or hyundais.
