Mahindra to raise production of XUV500 Crossover to 5000 units by August 2012!

Enthused by the tremendous response that their flagship crossover SUV model, the Mahindra XUV500, has elicited in the second round of bookings, Mahindra has plans of ramping up production capacity of the XUV500 to 5,000 units. The expansion in capacity is expected to happen by August 2012, by which Mahindra plans to invest a sum of INR 100 crores or about 20 Million USD, to bump up production of this crossover. Once that happens, expect the XUV500 to be available off the shelf. Also,  Mahindra is deferring exports of the XUV500 until domestic demand stabilizes.

The Mahindra XUV500 registered 25,000 bookings in a span of 10 days, the period in which Mahindra re-opened bookings of the best selling crossover. Mahindra had to resort to a computerized random algorithm based lucky draw process to pick out 7,200 randomly chosen owners from the 25,000 bookings the automaker received. Mahindra has accepted 7,200 final orders for the XUV500 crossover, a move that the Indian automaker took to ensure than the waiting period for the SUV doesn’t exceed four months. The XUV500 SUV is available only in 19 cities and is yet to be made available on a pan-India basis.

Mahindra also collected a booking amount of INR 80,000 to prevent speculators from booking the XUV500 in the hope of making a quick buck. Despite prices of the XUV500 being raised earlier this year, demand for the XUV500 hasn’t shown any signs of abating anytime too soon. The W8 all wheel drive variant of the XUV500 continues to remain unavailable for fresh bookings. In fact, Mahindra has accepted bookings only for the two wheel drive W6 and W8 variants of the XUV500 during the second phase of bookings. Fresh bookings are expected to be taken in the next 2-3 months.
