The Thar is available in two engine options which include a Direct Injection, 63 bhp diesel engine found on the Bolero and a much refined 2.5 liter turbocharged CRDe with 105 bhp also found on the Bolero and Xylo. Both engines come with a rugged 5-speed manual box.
Mahindra offers two variants of the Thar which are categorized as 4×2 DI and 4×4 CRDe. With this differentiation, Mahindra has targeted the rural as well as the urban buyer. The DI motor produces 63 bhp @ 3200 rpm and 18.2 kgm @ 1440 rpm while the much advanced CRDe BSIV is good for 105 bhp @ 3800 rpm and an impressive 25.2 kgm of torque from as low as 1800-2000 rpm making it the countries most powerful open-top SUV.
Mahindra claims to have spent Rs 5 Crore developing the Thar. The SUV gets independent front suspension with torsion bar and stabilizer bar while at the rear, semi-elliptical leaf springs to the job. As far as brakes are concerned the Thar gets a pair of discs up front and drums at the rear.
The new Mahindra Thar can be a fun car for short weekend getaways preferably in the woods where its all-wheel drive system will make sure you get out of the hedge without a scratch. So, a worthy entry level 4×4 vehicle for amateurs or even pro’s for that matter, who love the outdoors.
